Flat roofs are one of the most popular roofing options in apartments and multi-storeyed buildings. Most commonly used on large structures, flat roofs are typically made of synthetic rubber and asphalt. Unlike what the name suggests, flat roofs aren’t exactly flat but sloped between ¼ and ½ an inch per foot to allow efficient water drainage. With over three decades of experience in providing roofing services, Custom Roofing Inc has mastered installing and repairing flat roofs in Saskatchewan.

Types of Flat Roofing Systems

We offer a wide variety of flat roofing systems with distinct benefits. Some are more durable while others are more attractive. Here are your options:

Modified Bitumen

Also called torch-on roofing, modified bitumen is usually a 2-ply system that includes a smooth surface base sheet, and a self-adhered and granulated cap sheet. Modified bitumen is a premium membrane designed to last 30+ years. It is an asphalt-based roofing system designed for buildings with low-slope or "flat" roof structures. Originated in Europe in the mid-1960s, engineered with modified bitumen roofing membranes, these systems have been used successfully in Canada since 1975. Some major advantages of this roofing system are:

Superior waterproofing

Broad range of application methods

Versatile choice of top-surfacing

Help with insulation

And more

Single-ply Elastomeric Systems

Thermoset Rubber (EPDM)

EPDM is typically black in colour. Details and joints are sealed with contact-type adhesives and tapes. These are very economical systems and can be used effectively in a wide range of situations. EPDM roofing membranes are versatile and highly effective throughout a wide range of temperature and environmental conditions. EPDM membranes last in the range of 20+ years, but you can upgrade your system by using a thicker gauge or using a mesh reinforced option. There are many benefits to EPDM too, some of these are:

Resists almost all weather conditions

Is flexible and durable

Won’t crack from extreme moisture and dryness

Thermoplast Plastic

(PVC and TPO)

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) is a single-ply roofing membrane. It is one of the most popular and fastest-growing commercial roofing systems on the market. TPO roofing systems utilize a single layer of synthetics and reinforces scrim to cover flat roofs. These systems come in many attractive colours and can be specified when the aesthetics of the membrane are a factor. You can have an energy-saving "green roof" when using a lighter colour of the membrane because its reflective value increases during sunny summer days to reduce your cooling costs. Custom Roofing Inc uses a heat welding process to seal joints and details. As with EPDM, these membranes are effective for approximately 20+ years. Some expected benefits include:

Class A fire-rated

Highly reflective

Variety of choice

Four-ply Built-up Roofing of Tar and Gravel

Four-ply built-up roofing was the industry standard of tar and gravel in the early 1900s but has been replaced with more modern and safer roofing systems over time. Custom Roofing Inc will repair four-ply built-up roofing and will help you to choose an alternative roofing system when you are ready for replacement.
